Firefighters in Gary, Indiana, were tested by a fierce blaze at Collins Pallet Recycling that raged for over 18 hours on Sunday. NBC Chicago reports that the fire department received the call around 2:30 a.m. and arrived at the 1584 Blaine St. location to find the building engulfed in flames. According to officials, the presence of copious stacks of wooden pallets, both inside and around the facility, provided ample fuel for the fire, contributing to its rapid spread.
During their battle against the blaze, firefighters stumbled upon a gas can near an entrance to the building. As highlighted by a statement obtained by NBC Chicago, the timing of the fire and the recovered gas can are key elements in the ongoing investigation. While no injuries were reported, the incident did not conclude with the extinguishing of initial flames.
Later in the day, a second emergency call was made when a rekindled fire took hold of the company's outdoor pallet yard, as noted by Audacy. This subsequent blaze wreaked havoc on more pallets, as well as truck trailers, forklifts, and other heavy equipment. The heat and embers even managed to inflict damage on a neighboring property.
The Gary Fire Department, amid the smoldering aftermath, is said to be coordinating with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, among other agencies, to ascertain the cause and origin of the fires.
