A recent and fatal police shooting in Vancouver, Clark County, has sparked an ongoing investigation and community concerns. According to a report by OregonLive, Clark County Deputy Michael Gonzalez can be seen on a video screaming "you're gonna get shot" repeatedly before discharging his weapon, resulting in the death of Branden Whitcomb. Whitcomb had allegedly threatened his family with violence and was in possession of a gun at the time of the incident.

Bodycam footage of the event was released, which took place near Main Street and East 19th Street in Vancouver. The Clark County Sheriff's Office had earlier responded to a distress call from East 27th and H Street, where Whitcomb's family reported he was under the influence and had issued threats against his life and theirs, as recorded by KOIN.

Adding a contrasting narrative to the police's account, Danette Mead, Whitcomb's mother, reflected on her son's nature and their bond. In an interview with FOX 12, Mead stated, "He never would have hurt anyone." She shared memories of her early years as a single parent, saying, "It was just me and him, I was a single parent. And I used to tell him he was my first love, because I didn’t know what love felt like." Despite not watching the bodycam footage herself, Mead questioned the need for lethal force, remarking on the potential for non-fatal ways to subdue her son. She stressed a view that police should not "shoot to kill," suggesting that shooting him in the leg, for example, might have been a viable alternative to taking his life.

Forensic evidence recorded at the scene found a gun near Whitcomb's body, who sustained shots to the head, neck, and chest, and died minutes later. As the scrutinous eyes of the public weigh heavily upon this case, the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations (OII) is currently examining the circumstances leading up to the fatal shooting. After the OII concludes its probe into the incident, the findings will be forwarded to the Clark County District Attorney, whose office will determine if Deputy Gonzalez's actions were justified, according to information provided by FOX 12.
