The Socorro Independent School District Board of Trustees has made it official: Interim Superintendent James Vasquez will now lead as the permanent Superintendent of Schools. After an 18-month stint as Interim, Vasquez received a unanimous vote from the board, signaling full confidence in his capabilities to guide Socorro ISD into its future. This decision was announced at a meeting yesterday, Socorro ISD reported.
With thirty years in the educational sphere, James Vasquez has contributed significantly to the district, notably overcoming a $42 million budget deficit and rebuilding the trust and morale amongst the community and staff. His journey with Socorro ISD, rooted in humble beginnings as a teacher back in 1995 at Hueco Elementary, has seen him rise through the ranks and across various roles. As deputy superintendent and during his tenure as interim superintendent, SISD witnessed not only fiscal recovery but also maintained a strong academic performance among students, as highlighted in the 2025 STAAR/EOC results, according to Socorro ISD.
Riding high on the recent achievements, Vasquez embraced his new role, expressing his dedication to the district. "It is an incredible honor to officially serve as superintendent of the Socorro Independent School District. Over the last 18 months, we have achieved so much together, and we will continue to propel Socorro ISD forward," Vasquez told Socorro ISD. Community engagement and student success continue to be at the forefront of his agenda, aiming to maintain the district's high academic standings and ensure the fiscal health of the district.
Board President Michael Najera expressed equal enthusiasm for the appointment, praising Vasquez's steadfast commitment to education. "We are pleased to be moving ahead with Mr. Vasquez as our next superintendent. He will serve the district with true commitment and a relentless spirit for success," Najera said, as per Socorro ISD. Najera highlighted Vasquez's deep-rooted connection to the district and a track record that resonated strongly with the community's desire for their next educational leader.
