A tragic incident unfolded in Kalihi early this morning, resulting in the death of a 51-year-old woman after her vehicle struck a wooden utility pole. The crash was reported to have happened at roughly 1:18 a.m. on North King Street, near Pua Lane, as per Hawaii News Now.
The Honolulu Police have reported that the woman was driving westbound when, for reasons yet to be determined, her vehicle swerved off the road. Following the impact, which left the woman in critical condition, she was promptly transported to the hospital by the Honolulu Emergency Medical Services. KITV's coverage of the incident notes that she later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead, despite having been secured by a seatbelt.
This accident has raised the total number of traffic fatalities on Oahu this year to 52, a staggering jump from the 26 recorded at the same time last year. The stark increase points towards an alarming trend in traffic-related casualties. KITV provided this comparative data, which paints a concerning picture for road safety in the region.
The details around the cause of the crash remain unclear, with investigators yet to conclude if speed, drugs, or alcohol played a part in the fatal event. "At this time it's unknown if speed, drugs, or alcohol was a contributing factor," reports KITV.
