Today, a court handed down a life sentence to Lawrence Dority for the second-degree murder of Adreian Payne, a former Orlando Magic player. According to ClickOrlando, Payne was tragically shot and killed outside a townhouse complex on Curry Ford Road and was found inside his car when deputies arrived. The altercation was initially sparked by Payne's endeavor to help a woman entangled in a domestic dispute with Dority and his girlfriend in May 2022.
During the trial, Dority claimed that he felt threatened when Payne approached his home, compelling him to retrieve a gun and fire, though investigators confirmed Payne was unarmed. However, Dority's plea of self-defense fell on deaf ears as the jury quickly dismissed it, as reported by WESH. Surveillance video from the scene captured the sound of the gunshots, but no visual evidence was presented to support Dority's claims of feeling an imminent threat.
The verdict appears to have brought some measure of solace to the Payne family, as Antwan Payne, Adreian's brother, expressed relief and gratitude. "Adreian was my little brother. I'm just happy to have justice," Antwan Payne stated, as detailed by ClickOrlando. "It took a long time; we've been waiting three years for this and I'm glad it's been done. The jury did their duty because we needed to get this menace off the streets. I'm glad he's gone."
Dority's account of the events was notably emotional at times during the trial. He reportedly broke down while trying to explain his actions to the court, stating, "I just want to go home," an emotional plea that was reported by ClickOrlando. The jury, however, remained unmoved by Dority's expressions of remorse, sticking fast to the evidence presented, which pointed clearly to a homicide absent the credible threat of immediate harm.
The final decision brings some closure to Adreian Payne's loved ones and the community that admired him during his time with the Orlando Magic. While the pain remains, they can take some comfort in knowing that justice has been served.
