Security and law enforcement at Chesterfield County Detention Center experienced a searing breach when a loaded handgun was found during routine cell searches. According to QCNews, on August 23rd, detention officers alongside deputies discovered a loaded Walther P22 handgun while conducting their inspections throughout the facility.
The firearm was reportedly smuggled into the detention center by Zykemeon Nimir Davis, a Dillon, S.C., resident who had been arrested on August 20 for shoplifting and resisting arrest by the Cheraw Police Department. In a puzzling contrast to routine protocol, where such an event would typically unearth a cache of immediate charges and a buzzing hive of investigation, only one charge is currently set against Davis: possessing a gun in jail, as reported by WCNC. There seem to be no additional charges or suspects at this juncture.
Despite the grave implications of an inmate successfully smuggling a weapon into a detention center, the details surrounding how Davis managed to bring in the handgun remain obscured. A bond hearing that took place following his arrest put him legally within the walls of Chesterfield County Detention Center last Thursday, according to WBTV. This timeline places Davis within the detention center for several days before the weapon's discovery.
The incident has cast a disquieting shadow over the detention center's security measures, and officials have not yet publicly addressed the systemic cracks that permitted such an occurrence.
