In a move that's critical for the public safety communications infrastructure in Lorain County, the local Commissioners have made a play that stands to shift the landscape of emergency response connectivity. According to a post on the Lorain County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, authorities have decided not to renew the radio tower lease with Cleveland Communications, Inc. (CCI), set to expire in October 2025. But Sheriff Jack M. Hall reassures that this change will in no way hamper the county's ability to keep its residents safe and sound.
Despite the lease non-renewal, the Sheriff has made it clear that there will be no disruption in radio service for public safety. "Your public safety radio service will not be affected," assures the Lorain County Sheriff's Office, making a commitment to maintain full radio interoperability with departments that use the CCI radio system. This includes an array of agencies such as the Avon Fire Department, Lorain Police and Fire Departments, among others. The Sheriff has managed to virtually guarantee this through nearly $150,000 in radio equipment purchases, a testament to their dedication to inter-agency cooperation.
Such a logistical maneuver is often fraught with complications, but Sheriff Hall's office has sought to counteract any potential snags proactively. As cited by the Sheriff, connectivity with the legacy VHF system, CCI, and Ohio MARCS remains strong. This three-pronged approach ensures that communication lines remain robust even as the county navigates away from the current arrangement with CCI.
Both CCI and Ohio MARCS have stepped up to the plate, vowing to construct and steadfastly maintain a radio system for first responders across Lorain County. "CCI has assured my office that radio connectivity will continue if their equipment is maintained on the Lorain County tower or if it isn’t," said Sheriff Hall through the Lorain County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. These pledges help to buttress the Sheriff's promise to the county's residents for sustained public safety communications, a bulwark against the unpredictable nature of emergencies that demand swift, coordinated responses.
