In a stark reminder of the hazards facing outdoor enthusiasts, a hiker found himself in need of rescue this weekend in the rugged terrain above Tujunga. Stranded in a remote area on Haines Canyon Mtwy and unable to hike out, the 26-year-old male hiker's plight necessitated a response from the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) on Sunday afternoon.
The LAFD initially reported the incident via an alert detailing that the individual was unreachable by ground units. "Hiker Rescue; INC#0872; 01:36PM; Haines Canyon Mtwy; #Tujunga; 26M in a remote location, inaccessible via ground, unable to hike out," the statement read. Assistance from the Los Angeles County Fire Department's air resources was necessary given the challenging topography. Amid the golden hills that are made treacherous by their very beauty, the helicopter's rotors were perhaps the only welcome disturbance.
The coordinated rescue effort between the two fire departments culminated with the LACoFD's extraction of the patient. Employing a hoist operation, the rescuers successfully retrieved the hiker and subsequently transported him to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The official LAFD alert stated, "LACoFD will extract patient via hoist and transport to a local hospital."
Fire Station 74, along with Battalion 12 and other units, including helicopters H4 and HA4, responded to the call. Lyndsey Lantz, who issued the original alert, confirmed these details. The exact condition of the hiker, once in a predicament high above the sun-scorched landscape, has not been released.
