The incident, which took place at 5600 N Reseda Boulevard, saw 33 firefighters primarily from station FS 93 work to subdue a blaze described as having been located in a pre-existing basement with a tunnel passage. According to LAFD, specialized units were brought in due to the complexity of the structure, including Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) and Hazardous Materials units.
The LAFD deployed its USAR team to skillfully navigate and safely contain the situation in what could have been a confined space disaster. An announcement from the department detailed how these specialty-trained firefighters were "utilized in a possible confined space area." Similarly, to ensure the safety of both the firefighting team and the public, the Hazardous Materials unit was on scene to ascertain that no hazardous atmosphere was compromising the vicinity.
