A tense standoff unfolded on Wednesday at a plush Malibu beachfront property where an elderly woman was taken into custody after allegedly firing arrows at passersby. The incident, which began in the morning in the 25000 block of Malibu Road, triggered a response from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, as detailed by KTLA. The episode ensued when a person walking their dog claimed they were targeted with an arrow.
LASD officials disclosed that two individuals may have been injured, although the specifics of their conditions have not been released. It remains uncertain if the individual walking the dog was among them. Subsequently, the woman, in her 60s, was holed up inside her home, leading to a nearly eight-hour-long standoff. The road was shut down as deputies and negotiators attempted to persuade her to surrender, as reported by KTLA.
The suspect, who has not been immediately identified, was reported to have been involved in an altercation where she brandished a bow and arrow. Sources from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department indicated to NBC Los Angeles that during the argument, the weapon was used, although it was unclear if the other party was a neighbor. Coverage from the scene showed belongings scattered on the beach and law enforcement in tactical positioning before the situation was resolved with the woman’s hospitalization for unspecified injuries.
Neighbors recounted to ABC7 that this was not the maiden instance of erratic behavior from the 68-year-old. "There's a woman who was not happy with the dogs that we sometimes have on the beach," shared neighbor Larry May. "She was shooting arrows at people." The woman was taken to the hospital for evaluation. The Sheriff's Department is investigating to determine the appropriate course of action, be it booking into jail or transferring to another facility for further treatment.
