
The Broadway musical "Mamma Mia!" returned to the stage yesterday at the Winter Garden Theater. The audience gathered to see the show back at the theater where it was previously performed. Cast members and creatives appeared on the blue carpet before the show, an event covered by ABC 7 New York. ABBA’s music was featured, and 25 performers made their Broadway debuts.
The new cast included actors with touring experience as well as those new to Broadway. Photos published by Broadway World show Christine Sherrill in the role of Donna, Amy Weaver as Sophie, and a full ensemble in the production.
Preview performances indicated to industry insiders that "Mamma Mia!" was expected to be a Broadway box office success again. The Winter Garden Theater saw full attendance, with audiences engaged in the ABBA-filled production. However, "Mamma Mia!" is scheduled for a limited six-month run, encouraging fans to secure tickets promptly, according to a report by ABC 7 New York.
The musical, based on the songs of ABBA, originally opened in 2001 and became Broadway’s ninth-longest running show, as reported by Broadway World. Its success has lasted over 14 years with 5,773 performances, establishing it as a staple at both the Winter Garden and Broadhurst Theatres. The creative team, including director Phyllida Lloyd, choreographer Anthony Van Laast, and composers Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, were present for the opening night of this production, marking a familiar moment for both fans and crew.
