A man was fatally shot early Friday morning in south suburban Robbins, prompting a substantial law enforcement response. Robbins Police were alerted to gunfire at around 4 a.m. in the 3700 block of Maxey Court, NBC Chicago reports. Upon arrival, they discovered a man in the street who had been shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The identity of the victim has yet to be released as the investigation is ongoing. Multiple officers and deputies from the Cook County Sheriff's office joined Robbins Police to thoroughly canvas the area, questioning neighbors and gathering evidence. A tent was set up to cover the crime scene, where markers indicated the gravity of the incident, under the scrutinizing gaze of both the community and the police seeking to piece together the fragments left behind in the tragedy's wake.
Neighbors and relatives were visibly shaken as the investigation took place mere feet from their homes. "You know it's hard, very hard," Carolyn Tarochione, who identified herself as the cousin of the man who was shot, told ABC7. She expressed her shock at the event and concern for her family's peace.
Residents were startled by the violent disruption in what is typically a quiet neighborhood. Sardis Lane, who lives near the scene, recalled, "Well I heard probably about five shots. I heard two, and then, I heard another three." Others, like Carletta Traylor, found it hard to reconcile such violence on their usually peaceful block. "It's shocking, honestly. I understand crime can happen anywhere. Like, no area is isolated from crime. But it's a big shock, because usually, Maxey Court is a very quiet block," Traylor explained to ABC7.
According to Sean Howard, a spokesperson for the Robbins Police Department, the investigation is still in its early stages, and a motive for the shooting has yet to be ascertained. Robbins Police have indicated that the shooting seems to be an isolated incident and there's no immediate threat to the public. The Cook County Sheriff's Office is urging anyone with information to reach out at 708-865-4896 to assist in the ongoing investigation.
