In Manatee County, a troubling instance of animal cruelty has spurred an active investigation and a public call to action. On a discovery on Lena Road, Manatee County Animal Welfare (MCAW) found three cats in an abandoned crate, one deceased and the others critically malnourished, according to the city's news release.
George Kruse, chair of the Manatee Board of County Commissioners, condemned the abuse, stating, “This kind of abuse has no place in Manatee County,” and pledged full prosecution. Survivors are currently receiving care at Bishop Animal Shelter, showing affection despite what they endured. MCAW is working to find them permanent homes after recovery. In the words of MCAW Director Sarah Brown, “These animals suffered immensely,” in a statement obtained by Manatee County.
With increased legal consequences in place, the recent enactment of Trooper's Law and Dexter's Law in Florida classifies certain cases of animal abandonment as a felony and increases penalties for severe animal cruelty. MCAW is asking anyone with information related to the case to contact them at (941) 742-5933.
