Residents of Manatee County have a new excuse to visit Pride Park—StoryWalk®, an interactive literary trail designed for children and families. The Manatee County Public Library System extends an invitation to the community for the inaugural StoryWalk® event, taking place on the morning of Friday at Pride Park, where pages from a kid's book will greet visitors at different points on the path. This free event promises to combine the joys of reading with the benefits of a leisurely stroll outdoors.
The innovative concept, which sprouted from the fertile mind of Anne Ferguson back in Montpelier, Vermont, has been planted now in Florida's own soil, where it aims to grow a love for reading within the little ones as they scamper from one station to the next; their eyes alighting on tales spun across paper and the spaces between them, this project would not have been possible without the support from the Library Foundation of Manatee County, as noted in a social media post by the Manatee County Government.
For those unfamiliar, StoryWalk® breaks down a children’s book into individual pages, which are then mounted on signs along a popular walking trail—the goal being reading interspersed with periods of playful movement and exploration in nature's embrace. Emphasizing the importance of early literacy and physical activity, StoryWalk® has become a national success, resonating with communities and library systems looking to innovate beyond the static shelves of tradition.
On the day of the event, Miranda Fields, coordinator for children's programs at Manatee County Public Library, highlighted the dual benefits of StoryWalk®, "It's not just about the stories, it's about encouraging a healthy lifestyle too, for the families that come together share in the experience and leave with memories punctuated by the simple pleasure of a good book embraced under the Florida sun,” she remarked enthusiastically, revealing an organic blend of enthusiasm for literature and the great outdoors as Stories will unfold along the paths of Pride Park located at 6032 9th St E, Bradenton, FL 34203 from 10 AM until noon—children and guardians alike are welcomed to embark on a reading adventure that doubles as a delightful excursion.
The recognition that StoryWalk® elevates a typical visit to the park into an engaging literary journey reflects a commitment to weaving cultural and educational threads into the fabric of everyday life in Manatee County. Parents and guardians looking for a creative way to spend time with their children can mark Friday on their calendars for a special experience that is both enlightening and entertaining, courtesy of the Manatee County Public Library System and the Library Foundation of Manatee County.
