An Ozone High Pollution Advisory has been issued for Maricopa County due to expected elevated ground-level ozone levels that may exceed federal health standards, according to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). Ozone forms when pollutants such as vehicle emissions and industrial byproducts react with sunlight, with higher risks during hot weather.
As per the Maricopa County release, children, older adults, and people with respiratory conditions are most vulnerable. The agency advises limiting outdoor activities during the advisory period, especially for those with pre-existing lung conditions.
The Maricopa County Air Quality Department (MCAQD) is urging residents and businesses to help reduce ozone by carpooling, using public transit, teleworking, refueling vehicles in the evening, and avoiding the use of leaf blowers. Additional restrictions include bans on residential wood burning, off-road vehicle activity, and the use of leaf blowers by government employees and contractors.
To support public awareness, MCAQD provides information and resources through its Clean Air app, available on iOS and Android, which offers air quality updates and guidance on reducing exposure.
