Marion residents should plan ahead as several city services will take a break for the Labor Day holiday. Announced by Mayor Bill Collins, the City of Marion is preparing to shut down various departments on September 1, in observance of the national holiday that honors the contributions of American workers.

All administrative operations in City Hall will be paused for the day. Notably, sanitation services are set to temporarily halt on Monday, pushing the residents who normally receive Monday collections to bring their refuse to the curbside by early Tuesday morning. "Sanitation crews will collect both Monday and Tuesday's refuse on Tuesday, with the possibility that some of Tuesday's collection could extend into Wednesday," according to the official City of Marion notice. City dwellers should thus prepare to maybe see their trash linger a bit longer than usual.

Transportation services will also see adjustments during the holiday. Marion Area Transit buses are to conveniently take a day off, returning to their normal schedules the following day. Commuters depending on this public transit should take note and make alternative arrangements for their Monday commutes.

Additionally, the Marion Senior Center will not open its doors on September 1. Senior transportation will not be available, save for dialysis appointments, a decision that likely aims to minimize disruption for those with critical health needs. "No senior transportation will be available that day with the exception of dialysis appointments," says the City of Marion's announcement. Essential services, including fire, police, and airport operations, will press on to always maintain public safety and critical infrastructure.
