Marking two years post-devastation, Mayor Richard Bissen declared August 8, 2025, as Lā Hoʻōla, Day of Healing, honoring those affected by the 2023 Maui wildfires. A midday gathering at Kuhinia Maui brought together a community of over 300 people, including first responders and government representatives, to reflect on both the tragedy and the resilience of Maui's people. According to Maui County's official announcement, the event underscored the strength and perseverance in the face of hardship.
Among the attendees were Gov. Josh Green and members of Hawaiʻi’s Congressional delegation who praised the continued efforts of the community. Gov. Green emphasized the "power of resilience" and assured ongoing support for the survivors. Mayor Bissen, in a statement obtained by Maui County, commemorated the community’s spirit, stating, “We have witnessed countless acts of compassion, kōkua, and aloha.” Reflecting on the events that called upon the collective fortitude of Maui residents, a series of gatherings, including a Morning Paddle Out and an Evening Tribute, commemorated loved ones lost to the wildfires.
Hawaiʻi’s U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz and Sen. Mazie Hirono acknowledged the progress and the path ahead, recognizing the unique ways in which individuals and the community have faced the healing process. They stressed the importance of camaraderie and mutual support in rebuilding efforts. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda considered the collective strength of survivors and volunteers, remarking, “Warriors, every single one of you, fighting every single day,” according to an interview by Maui County.
The Midday Gathering also featured performances honoring first responders, with artists like Grammy-nominated singer Amy Hanaialiʻi. Noteworthy was the presence of approximately 40 representatives from various agencies, including the Maui Fire Department, Maui Police Department, and National Guard.
