Maui drivers, take note: the relentless forces of nature have prompted a closure along a stretch of South Kihei Road. Citing damages from coastal flooding, the County of Maui Department of Public Works announced that the southbound lane between Uwapo and Ohukai roads will remain shut down for the time being. The official County of Maui alert states that the road has, quite literally, been eaten away by the surge of ocean tides, leading to its current compromised state.
The closure goes into effect immediately, with an expected duration through next week as repairs are undertaken. Motorists are now to detour via Kenolio Road to bypass this stretch. The coastal flood statement from the National Weather Service, as noted by the county, underscores the urgency, as it remains in effect through Sunday night. With a High Surf Advisory also in place for all south-facing shores of the islands, residents and travelers alike are advised to not only alter their routes but to stay vigilant against the restless sea's advances.
Adding to the disruption, Kihei commuters are advised to approach the Waiakoa Bridge with heightened caution. This particular area on South Kihei Road, situated between North Kihei and Uwapo roads, has been reported flooded, complicating the journey for those who traverse this path.
