Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson appointed Adam Procell as the head of the city’s Office of Community Wellness and Safety, a position central to the city’s violence prevention efforts. The appointment, announced yesterday, was not from the list of previously announced finalists. "In that role, Adam will lead our front-line violence prevention efforts in the city, taking on a major role in public safety here in Milwaukee," Mayor Johnson stated, as reported by FOX6 News.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Procell’s appointment bypassed the standard public vetting process, as he was not one of the three finalists who previously underwent public questioning. His background, however, shapes his approach to the role—from perpetrator to advocate. In 1995, as a young man, Procell was involved in a fatal gang-related incident that resulted in a prison sentence of more than two decades. Since his release in 2018, he has focused on re-entry work, supporting former inmates as they reintegrate into the community.
Procell is expected to take an assertive approach in his new role. "I'm approaching this position as if it's one of triage. When I completed the 'Stop the Bleed' training a year ago, I learned you have to apply heavy pressure on the wound. I don't know if the community is ready for the pressure I'm going to apply. I told the mayor, 'If the pressure I apply is too uncomfortable, no hard feelings, you can fire me,'" Procell said in an interview, as WISN reported.
Despite the unconventional selection process, both Mayor Johnson and Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski have expressed strong support for Procell. Lipski stated, "Who better to help others chart that course out of that lifestyle than somebody who has so successfully done that? And has already dedicated his life to this mission?" The mayor encouraged the community to trust his decision and have confidence in Adam’s ability to perform effectively in his new role. This endorsement aims to address concerns about Procell's past by highlighting his personal transformation and dedication to positive change, as per report by FOX6 News.
