Andreus Shannon, a former basketball coach for a Memphis homeschool association, has been convicted and sentenced to a 12-year term in federal prison for sexually abusing an underage player and engaging in cyberstalking once she reached adulthood, as per court documents and federal authorities.
The 44-year-old coach's conviction follows revelations that he utilized his position to gain the trust of the player's parents, eventually convincing them to facilitate their daughter's transportation to practices and scrimmages across state lines, where the abuse occurred, Action News 5 reports. Shannon exploited the girl at various locations including his Memphis home, gyms in Mississippi and Tennessee, and a rental property, actions which he continued for years, even as he later resorted to cyberbullying and extortion to maintain a sexual relationship with her after she turned 18.
The United States Attorney’s Office stated that in addition to his prison sentence, Shannon will be subjected to five years of supervised release and is mandated to register as a sex offender in all jurisdictions where he lives, works, or attends school, WREG highlighted. These measures are set in place to mitigate any further risk Shannon might pose to communities following his incarceration.
Robert Eikhoff, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Jackson Field Office, issued a direct statement regarding the case, stating, "Andreus Shannon callously undermined the trust of unsuspecting parents, preying on a minor for years," and he emphasized the commitment of multiple law enforcement agencies in pursuing justice in this case and in cases like this, "Shannon’s deliberate actions in targeting the innocence of our youth will not be tolerated," Eikhoff told Local Memphis. His statement thanks the collaborative efforts of the FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Mississippi Attorney General's Office, Olive Branch Police Department, Oxford Police Department, and the Memphis Police Department in ensuring such offenders face the consequences of their transgressions.
