The City of Mesa has roped in Luis F. Ruiz, Jr. to fill the role of Director of Arts & Culture, aiming to bring forth a wave of renewal in the city's creative domain. The City of Mesa, where Ruiz, esteemed for his nearly three-decade-long career in cultural management across municipal and academic settings, is set to commence his tenure this October. While serving as Deputy Director for Parks and Recreation within Mesa, he oversaw the operations for Mesa Convention Center and other key venues, embedding himself in the city’s cultural fabric before enriching his expertise with a stint in Kansas.
In a statement made by the City of Mesa, the City Manager, Scott Butler, praised Ruiz's capacity for inspired leadership. "Luis represents exactly the kind of visionary leadership we need to propel Mesa's arts and culture scene to new heights," he said. Having strategized for the cultural enrichment of Lawrence, Kansas, Ruiz managed sizeable budgets and broadened community engagement in the arts; these experiences are hopefully set to propel Mesa’s cultural scene in his new role.
The responsibilities awaiting Ruiz are considerable; supervising revered institutions like the Mesa Arts Center - lauded as a substantial arts hub - and renowned establishments such as the idea Museum and Arizona Museum of Natural History. "I'm incredibly excited to return to Mesa and work alongside the talented teams at Mesa Arts Center, idea Museum and Arizona Museum of Natural History," Ruiz told the City of Mesa. His mission: to foster accessibility, community ties, and establish Mesa as a cultural beacon locally and beyond.
Mesa's decision to hire Ruiz followed a nationwide search facilitated by Arts Consulting Group, with a comprehensive selection process that sought the perspectives of the Foundation and Advisory Boards, staff, and city leadership. As expressed by Deputy City Manager Candace Cannistraro of the City of Mesa, Ruiz was a unanimous favorite, embodying a figure both capable of fostering unity and instilling confidence across diverse groups. Ruiz's leadership comes at a fortuitous moment, coinciding with concerted efforts to enhance Mesa's cultural programming, facilities, and community participation, his expertise expected to significantly contribute to Mesa's standing in the arts and culture sector in the Southwest.
