In a move that's raised both controversy and support, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith has just designated Navy Yard as a Juvenile Curfew Zone. As detailed in MPD's recent announcement, the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025 empowers the Chief to make such a decision in response to youth gatherings deemed threatening to public safety.
Starting from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. tomorrow, individuals aged 17 and beneath will face restrictions in the designated curfew area. According to the MPD's official press release, the zone extends from I-695 and Virginia Avenue, SE to the north, and South Capitol Street, SE from the Anacostia River, to I-695 to the west, with M Street and Potomac Avenue defining the southern border.
This enforcement will last until next Monday. During these hours, young people are prohibited from assembling in groups of nine or more unless they are participating in exempted activities such as attending school, religious, or employment-related events.
The action comes alongside a citywide curfew that remains in effect through August 31, all told this applies nightly for youths 17 and under from 11:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. the next morning.
