Recent directives from the Metropolitan Police Department have introduced a new Juvenile Curfew Zone in the bustling U Street corridor. Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith, responding to concerns of public safety, has laid down the boundaries for the operation that will restrict the movement of individuals 17 and under. The zone, as detailed in a recent press release, spans several blocks and will be in effect from Thursday, August 21st to Sunday, August 24th, active between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.
In the press release issued by the MPDC, the delineated perimeter encompasses V Street from 15th Street to Vermont Avenue, and it extends along Vermont Avenue up to Florida Avenue, including parts of Georgia Avenue and T Street. This development comes as a strategic implementation of the Juvenile Curfew Emergency Amendment Act of 2025, granting the police authority to establish curfew zones in response to gatherings of youth that pose potential threats to the surrounding community. Within this zone, groups of nine or more juveniles are not allowed in public spaces, with specific exceptions cited in the Act.
The presence of such a measure speaks to an underlying concern about the congregation of young people and the perceived effects on public safety. While some necessary activities are exempt from this curfew, the MPDC has highlighted that the citywide curfew for juveniles will continue until August 31st, beginning nightly at 11:00 p.m. and lasting until 6:00 a.m., as stated in the aforementioned release.
