
In a case that has garnered significant attention, William Otis Callaway, 58, entered a no contest plea to charges stemming from a September 2024 shooting incident in Lee Township, Michigan. Callaway is accused of "accidentally" shooting his girlfriend while target practicing outside her residence. He then transported the critically injured woman and her young granddaughter to a hospital, bypassing closer medical facilities, in an attempt to elude law enforcement scrutiny.
According to ClickOnDetroit, Callaway, who had been intoxicated at the time, fired a .22 caliber gun towards the front door of the residence, striking his then-girlfriend in the abdomen. Operating under the influence of alcohol, his decision to drive two hours to Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont was speculated to be avoid legal repercussions given his prohibited status from possessing firearms.
Initial false statements made by Callaway claimed that the injury occurred near a Park and Ride location close to the hospital. However, the truth surfaced when his girlfriend's 12-year-old granddaughter bravely disclosed the actual events to authorities, as mentioned by MLive.
As part of a plea agreement, several charges were dropped, but Callaway still faces up to 32 years in prison, factoring in the habitual offender enhancement. The victim, having survived the ordeal, continues to endure complications from the injury. "The victim was critically injured and had to be flown to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids for further emergency medical care. She survived the shooting, but continues to have complications today," the Midland County Prosecutor's Office conveyed to ClickOnDetroit.
During the local authorities' investigation, a search warrant executed at the Lee Township home led to the discovery of the handgun and spent cartridges. Callaway, with a substantial criminal record inclusive of prior prison sentences, was arrested at the hospital subsequent to admitting to the accidental shooting. He is scheduled to be sentenced on September 25, 2025, a date that looms with the potential to redefine yet again the parameters of his freedom.
