On a recent summer evening in Milwaukee, a deadly confrontation unfolded between local police and an armed suspect. At around 7:00 p.m. on August 9, Milwaukee Police officers were investigating a vehicle connected to a string of business robberies on the 2700 block of North 60th Street. According to the Milwaukee Police Department's Facebook post, officers located the suspect vehicle and were subsequently faced with an armed individual.
In an attempt to quickly de-escalate the situation, officers say they ordered the suspect to drop the gun multiple times. The orders went unheeded and gunfire was exchanged, with tragic results. The suspect, a 31-year-old man, was fatally shot. None of the involved officers were harmed during the incident. A firearm was recovered beside the deceased, confirming his armed status at the time of the shooting, as reported by the Milwaukee Police Department.
The aftermath of the shooting has prompted an investigation led by the Milwaukee Area Investigative Team, with the Brookfield Police Department taking the lead role. The four officers involved, whose service years range from over five years to more than twenty-one, have been assigned to administrative duty in line with standard procedures for such events, as per the Milwaukee Police Department.
To stay transparent and address public concern, the Milwaukee Police Department will release video footage of the incident. Their policy (SOP 575) allows critical videos to be shared within 15 days, balancing the public’s right to know with the need to protect the investigation and the privacy of those involved. The videos, which may be disturbing, are available on the Milwaukee Police Department's official social media.
