A high-speed police chase in Milwaukee took a tragic turn on Wednesday night when a 17-year-old boy died in a fiery crash. The Milwaukee Police Department had attempted to stop a car driven by Raki Henderson after observing reckless driving and connecting the vehicle to a felony warrant. Despite their efforts, Henderson fled, leading to a chase that concluded with the car slamming into a tree and bursting into flames at the intersection of 19th Street and Hampton Avenue.
According to FOX6 News, the teen's stepmother, Demita Prescott, expressed disbelief at the events, stating, "That is painful, to watch someone burn alive," and calling for answers as the situation seemed out of character for Henderson. Family members are struggling to come to terms with the sudden and shocking loss of the young man.
The pursuit was not without risk to the officers involved, as reported by WISN 12 News. Two officers were hospitalized; one with severe burns to his hands, arms, and leg, while another suffered from severe smoke inhalation. The head of the Milwaukee Police union, Alex Ayala, described the attempt to rescue Henderson as "heroic," acknowledging the physical and psychological toll taken on the officers engaged in the rescue attempt.
Witness Antonio Hullum recounted to TMJ4 that he witnessed the chase and crash after leaving a gas station, capturing the intense and harrowing situation that unfolded. Ayala further commented on the often-debated policy of police pursuits, stressing the importance of compliance with law enforcement's orders to prevent such tragedies. "I think the question is should you flee, and the answer is no. People should follow the law, and not flee, and then this would never happen," Ayala told WISN 12 News.
Further investigation revealed connections to a prior incident involving the vehicle Henderson was driving. Police disclosed that the car had been involved in an incident in which someone in the car shot at a person on Saturday night at 42nd Street and Villard Avenue. This background contributed to the decision to pursue the vehicle after the teen started to drive recklessly.
