Peoria motorists have found a small respite at the pumps this week, with average gas prices slipping by less than a cent. Per a survey by GasBuddy, the local average now hovers at $3.30 per gallon, as stations across the city show a slender dip in prices. A Casey's station in Washburn dipped under the $3 mark, offering relief at $2.99 per gallon, while the opposite end saw some stations maxing out at $3.49 per gallon.
The slight decline comes after two consecutive weeks of rising costs, attributed to a dip in oil prices to below $64 per barrel. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, indicated that "the national average price of gasoline saw a slight decline in the last week as oil prices fell below $64 per barrel, paving the way for prices to ease in most states," according to a statement obtained by Central Illinois Proud. It's not all smooth driving though, as markets prone to price cycling could potentially to see more volatility in the weeks ahead.
The statewide landscape for fuel costs revealed that the lowest gas price was $2.74 per gallon, while the steepest was $4.69 per gallon. Nationally, the average gasoline price dropped to $3.08 per gallon, with the average diesel price also ticking down by 1.8 cents to $3.69 per gallon. These current averages represent a decrease across the board compared to both the previous month and year-over-year figures.
As we swiftly approach Labor Day and the peak of hurricane season, De Haan warns of future potential disruptions to supply and prices. "As we approach the peak of hurricane season, forecasts are showing favorable conditions for tropical development, so we'll be watching closely for any potential impact on supply and prices as Labor Day nears," he mentioned in a statement to Central Illinois Proud. The fluctuating fuel costs are a reminder to motorists to stay alert to both the weather and the markets as they plan their travel and budget accordingly.
