In response to the rising tide of catalytic converter thefts, Montgomery County Police are offering a free new deterrent method for local car owners. In partnership with automotive establishments in the area, the department has initiated the "Etch & Catch" program, aiming to provide Montgomery County residents the chance to secure their vehicles against theft. This community service will be provided without charge and involves permanently marking catalytic converters with a unique ID that can be tracked if stolen.
According to the official Montgomery County Police advisory, the service will not only etch identification numbers onto catalytic converters, but it will also include the application of bright paint. This paint serves as a visible sign to deter potential thieves, making it less likely for the parts to be swiftly stolen. A window cling decal will accompany the paint job to further indicate that the vital car part is traceable — and potentially hot goods if found on the black market.
This anti-theft initiative comes as an answer to the community's growing security needs. On top of the etching service, the police are also putting converters into a secure database, allowing for easier identification and recovery should theft occur. "Together, we can take simple steps to make our community safer," the police department said in their advisory, urging residents to join the program.
