An investigation is underway after a trash collection truck explosion in Moraine, Ohio, caused significant alarm and led to road closures last Friday morning. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at a natural gas fill station at the intersection of State Route 741 and Cardington Road. According to WHIO, a Rumpke truck was in the process of refueling when the explosion took place.
Doug Hatcher, the Moraine Fire Division's Fire Marshall, reported to Dayton 24/7 Now that upon arrival, crews found the truck engulfed in flames. The aftermath led to the closure of both roads to safely manage the situation for people in the vicinity and for passing travelers. North Springboro Pike has since been opened, although the cause of the explosion remains unknown. Hatcher also noted that the investigation might take longer to conduct, as the Moraine Fire Division expects to assist an outside agency in this process.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. This was confirmed by a statement Rumpke communications coordinator Molly Kennedy gave to FOX8, where she also emphasized the rarity of such events. "We do not have a record of anything like this happening with our trucks before. We do everything we can to make sure our trucks are safe," Kennedy claimed. She explained that drivers are required to perform daily inspections before commencing their shifts to ensure the trucks are functioning correctly.
Hatcher described the explosion's intensity, saying, "We all heard it, myself and the battalion, were on a street close by," he told FOX8. "It was pretty loud, I mean, we were a good three-quarters of a mile away." The explosion's investigations are ongoing and are focused on uncovering any potential safety lapses or mechanical failures that may have contributed to the event. Meanwhile, the Montgomery County Recycling and Yard Waste Drop-off facilities, which were affected by the closures, are set to reopen on Saturday.
The explosion has disrupted normalcy within Moraine but has thankfully not resulted in physical harm to individuals. With SR-741 reopened and cleanup efforts underway, the remaining closures are expected to lift soon, restoring the flow of daily life in the impacted areas.
