In the early hours of August 4, a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a transit bus operated by the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada in Henderson, according to a statement issued by the police department and covered in the City of Henderson news release. The tragic incident occurred at the intersection of Racetrack Road and Burkholder Boulevard, where the responding Henderson Police and Fire Departments found that the RTC bus, not in service at the time, made a left turn on a flashing yellow signal, consequently obstructing the motorcyclist's path.
The initial investigation revealed that the bus was headed eastbound when making the turn, and the motorcyclist traveling in the opposite direction collided with the vehicle's front right corner leading to the rider's immediate separation from the motorcycle and subsequent death at the scene, which authorities closed off for about 5 hours as they examined the unfortunate turn of events. Although impairment and speed don't seem to be contributing factors, the bus driver remained on-site and received a citation, while the findings of the investigation are yet to determine the underlying cause of the fatal crash, this has been labeled the city's sixth traffic death of the year.
