
An MTA police officer is now in recovery after an incident yesterday where he accidentally inflicted a gunshot wound on himself while cleaning his service weapon at Grand Central Terminal. The officer was in a police facility inside the transit hub when the weapon discharged, striking him in the leg.
According to the report by ABC7NY, he was alone in a back room during the mishap. The wounded officer, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for the treatment of his non-life-threatening injury.
Following the occurrence, the MTA Police Department's Internal Affairs Division launched an investigation to unearth the circumstances behind the firearm's accidental discharge. FOX 5 New York shared that the incident occurred in the early hours and emphasized that the Internal Affairs Division is reviewing the events.
The MTAPD has not released additional statements about the officer's condition or the findings of the ongoing internal review.
