Law enforcement in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and now with the aid of the FBI, are intensively searching for a suspect involved in a multi-state crime spree. Mason L. Payne, 23, is branded by officials as "armed and dangerous" after he allegedly struck and dragged a Massachusetts State Police trooper before leading authorities on a high-speed chase, according to NBC Boston. The encounter began when Payne was supposed to be stopped on I-91 near Holyoke, but opted to quickly flee, engaging police at speeds over 100 mph.
Authorities had attempted to safely apprehend Payne, deploying both a K-9 unit and an Air Wing. However, they were forced to eventually terminate the chase as Payne neared a highway work zone, to not endanger the lives of workers. The trooper involved in the initial incident was not seriously harmed, as shared by NBC Boston. Payne, driving a black Audi with temporary Vermont plates, was last spotted entering Connecticut, with local authorities in Shelton issuing an alert for New Haven and Fairfield counties.
The incident is rooted in an earlier reported domestic assault in Dover, Vermont, where Payne was allegedly involved in a confrontation using a weapon. Vermont State Police were the first to respond around 5 p.m. yesterday, with the sequence culminating in Massachusetts and then spilling into Connecticut. The black Audi he is believed to be traveling in has become a focal point of the search efforts, and the public has been cautioned by police to not approach Payne or the vehicle, but to call 911 with any relevant information.
Connecticut State Police have now joined the manhunt, tapping into resources from the FBI. This alliance is indicative of the seriousness with which agencies are to quickly bring a conclusion to a situation fraught with potential danger. "The FBI is leading the investigation," as stated by Massachusetts State Police, emphasizing the escalated level of concern around this pursuit. The public is urged to provide any details or sightings of Payne directly to law enforcement, as per the advisory from WTNH. The current whereabouts of Payne remain unknown as officials continue their investigation.
