Nantucket has been gripping with tension after a series of bomb threats over the past week targeted the same Main Street address, prompting multiple evacuations and extensive law enforcement responses. According to NBC Boston, the threats, all of which turned out to be hoaxes, were directed towards 16 Main St., the location of a Ralph Lauren store. The most recent threat occurred on Saturday night when a call warned of an intention to place an improvised explosive device at the address.
Saturday's fake bomb threat was received around 10:30 p.m., followed by immediate action from local police, Massachusetts State Police, and Nantucket Fire Department. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, stationed on the island for a separate event, searched the area and no device was found, reported NBC Boston. Authorities concluded their investigation of the area shortly after 11:30 p.m., reassuring the public of their safety. This followed two threats the previous night and one earlier last Tuesday, all centered around the same location.
The Nantucket Police Department is working in tandem with the FBI and state police to investigate the string of threats. Investigators are treating each threat with due diligence, but have yet to provide specific details about the ongoing investigation. "This was a false report, but we take every threat seriously," Nantucket Police were quoted as saying in a press release obtained by WCVB. The continual threat has not only caused repeated disruption but has also placed a strain on local authorities and first responders.
Concerned individuals with knowledge pertaining to any of the bomb threats are urged to come forward and assist law enforcement in their efforts to identify those responsible. Gathering information from the community, officials are determined to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike. The Nantucket Police Department Detective Unit, Massachusetts State Police, and the FBI are encouraging witnesses with any pertinent information to make contact, in a statement reported by WCVB.
