Protests have been held across the country, including in Texas, against GOP-led redistricting efforts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. At one demonstration, a protester said, "The Texas legislature is taking an already Republican favored map and is trying to carve out five more Republican districts," according to ABC15. Former President Donald Trump commented on July 15, "It's a very simple redrawing we will pick up five seats," while Governor Greg Abbott pointed to redistricting practices in Democratic-led states such as Illinois, California, New York, and Massachusetts.
Arizona State Representative Patty Contreras spoke at a protest, saying, "They're trying to rig it so they can get more members of Congress and that's just wrong," as reported by ABC15. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom addressed redistricting efforts favoring Democrats, stating, "We have got to recognize the cards we have been dealt. We have to fight fire with fire."
Texas Republicans have restarted efforts to redraw U.S. House district maps after Democrats returned from a two-week walkout in Illinois, as per AP News. California is moving forward with its own redistricting strategy, while Arizona continues to use its Independent Redistricting Commission, which was commended for fairness after the 2020 Census. Contreras said, “I don’t like the idea that we have to do this, I hope Texas and the other states decide to not go through with this gerrymandering. But if they do it’s the only way we can fight back,” as mentioned by ABC15.
