A fatal shooting in Newberry Springs on Wednesday evening has left one man dead and his neighbor in custody. The San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department reported that deputies responded to an assault with a deadly weapon at a residence on Yermo Road, where they found 59-year-old Andrew Sperhac with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts, Sperhac was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to an official statement published by the Sheriff's Department, the incident occurred around 7:24 p.m., when an argument between Sperhac and his neighbor, 53-year-old Paul Weinhold, escalated to violence. The argument culminated in the shooting, after which Weinhold was apprehended by the authorities without incident. He has been booked for murder and is currently being held without bail at the High Desert Detention Center.
As the Homicide Detail of the Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division took over to thoroughly investigate the murder, residents of the quiet Newberry Springs community have been left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss.
