A late July incident at a Fort Mill Motel 6, which resulted in the death of a man, has concluded with no charges filed. Kendale Richardson Williams, 23, was shot at approximately 3:32 a.m. on July 27 at the motel near Carowinds. Following an investigation by the York County Sheriff's Office, it was determined that the shooting was in self-defense, as reported by WCNC.
In the light of these events, questions about safety procedures and the consequences of self-defense scenarios have been raised once again by community members. The shooter, working as a rideshare driver who has not been named, claimed he acted in self-defense. According to WSOC-TV, the sheriff’s office released a statement affirming the driver's actions as self-defense, with the deceased, Williams, being identified as the aggressor during the incident.
Further details provided by WBTV reveal that Williams had requested a ride through a rideshare service to the Motel 6. Once there, still inside the vehicle, officials said that Williams used a stun gun on the driver and then proceeded to attempt to strangle him. "The male driver fired his firearm, which he was legally carrying, and shot Williams," officials said.
Williams was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, wrestling with the difficult problem of determining the fine line between self-defense and excessive force. After a review by the sheriff's office and the Sixteenth Circuit Solicitor's Office, it was concluded that "the driver was acted in self-defense," and hence no charges were warranted as detailed by WBTV's report.
