City officials in Norman are increasing efforts to encourage public awareness and caution in and around work zones. This initiative follows recent statistics highlighting the significant safety risks associated with these temporary traffic conditions. According to a statement obtained by the City of Norman, in 2023 there were 899 fatalities, 39,000 injuries, and a staggering 101,000 crashes, all taking place within the confines of work zones.
Public Works Director Scott Sturtz highlighted the importance of complying with traffic control measures, which are essential for maintaining safety in construction zones. Following several recent near-miss incidents at local work sites, the city is intensifying its efforts to raise public awareness. Community adherence to established safety protocols can significantly reduce the risk of such incidents.
Key safety recommendations include reducing speed to improve reaction time, staying alert to shifting barricades and signage, and following city-issued instructions when traveling through active work zones. Drivers are also encouraged to increase following distance—a simple but important measure to help prevent accidents caused by sudden stops.
Patience and awareness are required as multiple infrastructure projects, including some voter-approved, proceed across the city. Streets Program Manager Joseph Hill noted ongoing safety concerns at work sites and advised the public to slow down and stay alert in all work zones. Norman officials are working to manage traffic flow while prioritizing public safety.
