Amidst the ongoing efforts to address North Carolina's healthcare workforce shortage, Governor Josh Stein made a visit to West Henderson High School to highlight the school’s groundbreaking Healthcare Fellows program. Launched with the collaboration of Henderson County Public Schools, Blue Ridge Community College, AdventHealth Hendersonville, and UNC Health Pardee, this initiative stands as a beacon of hope, promising to equip students with the necessary skills to pursue careers in healthcare—an industry currently beleaguered by a severe lack of professionals.
During his visit, Governor Stein emphasized the critical situation in the state, stating, "After Hurricane Helene, it is inspiring to see how public schools, community colleges, and employers are coming together to innovate and create new opportunities for students," according to a recent press release from the Governor’s Office. His budget proposal, which aims to significantly expand the healthcare workforce, now rests with the General Assembly, which has yet to finalize the budget for the 2025–2027 period.
The Governor’s budget underscores the need for investments in educational institutions and Area Health Education Centers, which are critical to increasing the number of healthcare instructors and facilitating access to nursing careers. However, the absence of a full budget continues to hinder these efforts.
Furthermore, Stein's advocacy extends beyond educational initiatives. In his commitment to the state's recovery post-Hurricane Helene, he has urged for increased federal investment. The Governor’s Office stated, “As we continue the ongoing work of rebuilding, Congress and the administration need to get to work to deliver much needed dollars to western North Carolina.” His dedication was also manifested through his participation in the "Rediscover the Unforgettable" campaign, aiming to bring attention and support to local businesses affected by the catastrophe.
In addition to his educational endeavors, Governor Stein has also been actively honoring those in western North Carolina who have demonstrated resilience and community spirit in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. This took place at an event hosted by the Land of Sky Regional Council, where local officials and community leaders were brought together in acknowledgment of their steadfast efforts.
