A North Carolina mother has filed a lawsuit against the online game platform Roblox, claiming that her 10-year-old daughter was the victim of sexual exploitation by an online predator who used the app to coerce the child into sending explicit images, as reported by WBTV. In the suit, filed Aug. 21 in Guilford County, the complaint alleges that the young user known as Jane Doe N.L. was groomed and exploited by an individual who provided virtual currency, known as Robux, in return for the explicit materials.
The lawsuit levies serious accusations against Roblox, stating that the platform misrepresented its safety measures for children and did not effectively prevent predators from operating on its service, this according to WCNC; furthermore, the child, who began using the platform at the tender age of 6, was subjected to severe emotional trauma, including depression and anxiety as a result of what ensued, lamentably she started to have suicidal thoughts and engaged in self-harm behavior.
Additional details from the lawsuit highlighted the lack of age verification on the Roblox platform, which could allow adults to message children without compelling evidence of their age, as alleged by WBTV, though Roblox claims it has a stringent safety system, with thousands of moderators and a strict chat filter, especially for children under 13.
The complaint further casts Roblox in a damning light, with an insider quoted in the lawsuit stating, "You have to make a decision, right? You can keep your players safe, but then it would be less of them on the platform. Or you just let them do what they want to do. And then the numbers all look good and investors will be happy," a chilling indication of the company's priorities as discussed by QC News, the lawsuit further alleges that Roblox hosted games with sexually suggestive themes and that they permitted user accounts with names resembling those of convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.
The family is seeking monetary damages, the reimbursement of medical expenses, attorney fees, and a trial by jury. Meanwhile, Roblox, with more than 300 million monthly users, finds itself mired in a controversy that brings into stark focus the delicate and crucial responsibility online platforms hold in safeguarding their often young user base, a duty seemingly traded for unchecked ascension in the marketplace, according to allegations brought forth in these legal actions.
