The Sikh community in North Hollywood is seeking justice following the violent assault of 70-year-old Harpal Singh, who was attacked near the Sikh Gurdwara of LA on August 4th. According to FOX 11, Singh was brutally beaten with a golf club while on his daily walk, resulting in such severe injuries that he required him to undergo three surgeries and was left him in a state of induced coma.
Singh's brother, Dr. Gurdial Singh Randhawa, spoke on the gravity of the situation: "He is totally unconscious, they keep him under sedation," a statement shared during a press conference. The assailant, described as a man in his 50s riding a bike at the time of the attack, has not been apprehended, reports CBS News Los Angeles. The police are actively searching for the suspect and are soliciting tips from the public, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Munmeeth Kaur, with the Sikh Coalition, emphasized the peaceful values of their community in the wake of this violence. "We believe in justice. We believe in forgiveness. We believe in equality," Kaur told KTLA. This latest incident has spurred discussions about safety as the area has been described by nearby business owners as historically troubled with vandalism and violence.
While law enforcement has not officially categorized the event as a hate crime, the proximity of the attack to the Sikh Gurdwara and the nature of the assault have raised questions about the motive. Los Angeles City Councilman Adrin Nazarian underscored the importance of community support, stating at a press conference, as noted by FOX 11, "We need to, at times like this, make sure that we're offering all of our support necessary so that no community member feels left behind." Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the LAPD or to leave anonymous tips with the L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers Hotline.
