With the collective memory of last year's violence still fresh, the NYPD is taking significant measures to bolster safety at the upcoming National Dominican Day Parade in New York City. As reported by Gothamist, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced that the police presence will be substantially increased. Nearly doubling the number of officers on duty, the police force is determined to ensure that the parade is a secure event for participants and spectators alike. "Having looked at what occurred last year in the staffing numbers, we probably under-did the staffing at this parade," Tisch said, emphasizing the commitment to safety this year.
The festivities are set to begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, with a march along 6th Avenue from 36th Street to 55th Street in Manhattan. The detailed street closures are available for the public's information. Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, and several other officials are expected to be in attendance, signaling the importance of the event which celebrates Dominican heritage and pride. Jessica Tisch highlighted the issue, stating, "That was unacceptable, and we will not tolerate it happening again," according to Gothamist.
As per ABC 7 New York, the parade, now in its 43rd year, is expected to draw more than a million revelers. ABC 7 New York, a proud sponsor of the parade, will also stream the event live, enabling those who can't attend to join in the celebration virtually. Congressman Adriano Espaillat, at the NYPD press conference, conveyed his enthusiasm for a joyous and secure parade, telling ABC 7 New York, "We're very proud that the police department has really increased their presence in the parade route to ensure that everybody is safe."
The safety measures come in response to the incidents at the Bronx Dominican Day Parade two weeks earlier, which were marred by shootings and a stabbing. This year's enhanced security will also see the addition of 140 traffic agents, the K9 team, and drone teams. An early start time has been implemented for the parade, and NYPD is extending its vigil beyond the actual event. "From my perspective, having looked at what occurred last year in the staffing numbers, we probably underdid the staffing at this parade," Tisch said, promising a different approach this weekend, as per ABC 7 New York.
The anticipated parade will showcase the theme "Quisqueya & USA: United in Culture and Tradition," led by Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson, and featuring MLB 7-times All-Star Nelson Cruz as the Grand Marshall.
