The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has provided an update regarding several current improvement projects affecting major roadways across Oʻahu, including the H-1 Freeway and the H-201 Moanalua Freeway. Motorists are advised to expect ongoing construction-related disruptions, with work schedules largely taking place during off-peak hours to minimize impact on daily commutes.
Significant construction is underway on the H-1 Freeway with the deck demolition and concrete work between the Hālawa Interchange and the H-1/H-2 split occurring on weeknights, specifically Tuesday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. as well as weekend work from Friday evenings into early Sunday mornings, a schedule that is clearly intended to evade the heaviest traffic but frustrates drivers nonetheless. As per HDOT's update, this project's projected finish line is a distant March 2027.
In a setting closer to resolution, the H-1 Salt Lake Rehabilitation project nears its end with continuous eastbound closures taking place from Friday nights to early Monday mornings, and final striping work set to hit the westbound lanes in September 2025, pushing the completion date to October as opposed to the previously communicated June of the same year. Meanwhile, the westbound H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct sees concrete deck and roadway improvements, with closures happening from Monday through Thursday weeknights and full closure for the westbound viaduct on Fridays and Saturdays, all this activity prolonging the anticipated completion until December 2025, a delay from an initially proposed August.
Ongoing eastbound H-1 Freeway improvements feature lane closures, utility relocations, and the construction of new retaining walls, affecting the lanes on weeknights and various local streets on weekdays, with a new wrinkle in the schedule as an overnight full closure is expected to unfold come March 2026 for the installation of a temporary pedestrian bridge, sliding the overall project end date to September 2027. Alongside this, the H-201 Moanalua Freeway resurfacing stretches from Sunday to Friday nights with the westbound direction seeing attention first and an estimated wrap-up by January 2026, according to HDOT's timeline.
HDOT emphasizes the importance of driving with caution around work zones, adhering to traffic control signs and barriers, and planning ahead for any impacted commutes. Special duty officers are in place to enhance safety during these operations. All projected dates and schedules are subject to change contingent on weather conditions. Motorists can stay updated on closures and project progress by visiting the HDOT website or, for weekly updates, registering at their designated online portal.
