Yesterday, tragedy struck on Nimitz Highway resulting in Oahu’s 56th traffic fatality for the year. A 49-year-old male motorcyclist was killed in an accident that occurred around 2:35 am in the Kalihi area, according to the Vehicular Homicide Section of the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) Traffic Division, as reported by KHON2.
Investigations reveal the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on the highway at a high rate of speed, when he lost control and hit the concrete curb, resulting in him being ejected onto the road. Speed has been identified as a likely contributing factor, though it remains unclear if alcohol or drugs played a role. The HPD has not made any definitive statements on these elements of the case at this time, and the incident is under an ongoing investigation.
Following the crash, Honolulu Emergency Medical Services pronounced the individual deceased at the scene, according to Hawaii News Now. This latest incident marks a significant increase in traffic fatalities compared to the previous year, rising from 27 at the same point in time in 2024.
