
An off-duty NYPD officer tragically lost his life on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway during a hit-and-run incident yesterday morning. The 30-year-old officer, who was riding his motorcycle, was struck by a box truck near exit 27, according to Gothatmist.
Authorities received a distressing 911 call at approximately 8:27 a.m., signaling an accident that would soon be grieved by a city, the officer, who had been traveling in the outermost lane of the BQE, was fatally injured in this crash and the driver of the box truck fled the scene after the collision and, as reported by the New York Post, it's possible that the driver may not have even known they had struck someone. After the grim collision, the officer was transported to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, where he was pronounced dead.
The impact was severe enough to cause the officer's motorcycle to ignite resulting in a fiery scene captured in distressing footage that has emerged on social media, per the New York Post’s finds; the NYPD's Highway Districts Collision Investigation Squad currently leads the ongoing investigation into this devastating event. The city’s Police Benevolent Association expressed their sorrow over the incident, tweeting, "Devastated by the loss of our brother following an off-duty motorcycle crash in Brooklyn this morning. Please join us in praying for his family, friends and co-workers as they deal with this unimaginable loss," as reported by Gothatmist.
The identity of the fallen officer has yet to be publicly disclosed pending notification of next of kin, however, records reveal he joined the NYPD in February of 2021, and he was assigned to the midnight tour at the 84th Precinct in downtown Brooklyn, the details provided by the New York Post illustrate a promising career cut tragically short. No arrests have been made at the time of writing, and law enforcement is actively seeking any information that may lead to the apprehension and charge of the individual responsible for the officer's death.
