An investigation is underway by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation after a Hudson police officer shot a man who was reportedly wielding a hammer. The incident occurred early morning yesterday on State Route 91, near Stoney Hill Drive, when the officer encountered a barefoot man who was allegedly shouting at passing drivers, News 5 Cleveland reported.
The confrontation took place at approximately 4:11 a.m., shortly after the Hudson Police Department received a 911 call about an individual who appeared to confront motorists aggressively. "There was a guy walking down the street with a t-shirt and bare feet," a 911 caller described, according to a WKYC report. "And he started yelling at me as I rounded the corner from Stoney Hill to Darrow," the caller explained in a statement obtained by News 5 Cleveland.
Upon arrival, the officer found the suspect near the mentioned intersection, and according to Hudson Police, the man confronted the officer while holding a hammer. In response, the officer discharged their weapon, injuring the man, who was later taken to Summa Akron City Hospital. The details regarding his condition have yet to be released, as reported by Cleveland19 News.
Prior to the shooting, the same man is believed to have shattered the front door of a nearby Sunoco gas station. Nick Patel, the store owner, was surprised to find after reviewing security footage that the individual seemed not to steal anything but "just broke the glass and walked out," Patel recounted in an interview with News 5 Cleveland. The police have yet to release the names of either the man who was shot or the officer involved, nor have they specified whether the officer is on administrative leave.
The incident has left the community in disbelief, with residents expressing their shock over the occurrence in an area often considered quiet and safe. "We are absolutely stunned. We're like, what's happening?" Jack Castrigano, a local resident, told WKYC. The road where the incident happened was closed for hours, but has since been reopened. The Hudson Police Department has sought assistance from the BCI, which is now heading the ongoing investigation to uncover more details surrounding this unsettling event.
