Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has infused fresh perspectives into the Cleveland State University (CSU) Board of Trustees with recent appointments. Abigail Blackburn, a student, began her term on June 27, which will conclude in May 2027, according to CSU's official announcement. Joining her in stewardship is Michael Klein, CPA, who took his seat ex officio concurrently with his role as chair of the Cleveland State University Foundation, Inc., as of July 1.
In performing their duties, Timothy Cosgrove, chair of the CSU Board of Trustees, spoke on the value of the duo, stating, “The unique viewpoints that both Abigail and Michael bring to the table are essential to our work as the governing body of Cleveland’s public university.” According to the CSU News, despite holding vast experience, including over 30 years in accounting, Klein's appointment ensures an alignment between the CSU Foundation and the university’s strategic goals, a timely move given the interconnected nature of their operations.
Blackburn, who is currently enrolled at CSU pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, boasts an active on-campus presence being part of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Her past as a former member of the women's golf team colors her experience, enriching the board with a blend of academic and extracurricular insights. Her ambitious academic journey is marked by an intent to continue at CSU in an accelerated master’s program after her undergraduate completion.
The dual threat represented by Klein's credentials is hardened by his foundational roles, in the veins of both the CPA firm Ciuni & Panichi, Inc. and beyond. As Klein himself put it, "The CSU Foundation does incredible work to support students, faculty, athletics, programming and more," he said in a statement obtained by CSU. "By serving on both boards, I can ensure the Foundation’s priorities are aligned with the University’s strategic vision." His academic roots run deep into CSU ground, with a pair of degrees—including an MBA with a finance emphasis—proudly held from the institution.
Praising the commitment of both trustees, CSU President Laura Bloomberg underscored the importance of their roles. "When our Board includes Trustees who bring experience as students and alumni, we deepen our understanding of CSU’s legacy as together we build for our future," she told Cleveland State University News. Klein and Blackburn are poised to infuse their unique blend of lived experience and professional expertise into the governance of CSU, setting a precedent for inclusive leadership that echoes with every student's voice amidst the university's august halls.
