The Ohio State University, in collaboration with Google Public Sector, has launched a new initiative granting students, faculty, and staff access to specialized AI tools designed to enhance education and research. In a statement obtained by OSU News, Ohio State's Executive Vice President and Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda underscored the initiative's focus on integrating AI education into undergraduate studies, asserting, "Every student who’s coming in this year will graduate being bilingual – fluent in AI and the application of AI in their careers."
The partnership formed between the educational institution and tech giant Google centers around an "AI Fluency" initiative. This program aims to provide the campus community with secure versions of Google AI tools, ensuring that Google does not save or share users' information. A significant showcase of the tools and their capabilities took place at the recent Data & AI Day, an event held at Ohio Stadium. Attendees received firsthand experience with Google's Gemini large language model and NotebookLM research assistant, among other applications.
During the event, Google Public Sector's Chief Technology Officer Charles Elliott addressed the integration of AI into educational workflows, stating through Ohio State News, "We really try to focus on making sure that AI can be folded into the workstreams that many of you do. And of course, think about productivity." Part of the outreach included breakout sessions where instructors could learn how to leverage these AI tools for course design and aid students' preparation for exams.
One of the highlights for researchers at the event was the opportunity to engage with Google AI's resources, tapping into a broad array of models and datasets. Here, they demonstrated how to condense complex research articles into comprehensible audio overviews, an application that Chris Daughtery, education strategy lead representative for Google Cloud discussed. "Understanding what tool to use for what is important," Daughtery told participants, according to Ohio State News.
