Early this morning, Oklahoma City crews were called to address a significant water main break. This incident took place near SW 59th St. and May Ave., disrupting traffic flow and closing off part of the roadway. KFOR reports that the section between Drexel Ave. and May Ave. was sealed as work on the break commenced. Recently, one lane in each direction on SW 59th St. has reopened to traffic.
According to additional details provided by OKC FOX, flooding was significant enough that it led to a roadblock along May, not an uncommon response to such events. The intersection swelled with waters, profoundly impacting its usual pulse and lifeblood: the steady stream of vehicular traffic. A construction team is set to carry out necessary maintenance in this affected area.
Compounding this disruption is the memory of another incident, a similar break on May Avenue just last month, leading to extended traffic challenges. News 9 notes that this previous break caused traffic disruptions for several days, signaling a possible pattern or a larger infrastructural concern that the city may need to address. In this latest event, while May Avenue remained accessible, detours took place off 59th Street, beginning around 3:30 a.m.
Authorities have yet to provide specific details regarding the cause of the current water main break and the estimated timeline for repairs was not immediately available.
