Commuters in Oklahoma City, get ready for a host of changes to your familiar routes. According to an official release from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, dated August 15, several highways and ramps will be experiencing closures and narrowing due to ongoing construction projects across the city.
The westbound I-240 off-ramp to westbound I-40 is scheduled for closure from the early hours of 3 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Drivers are warned to expect congestion, and seek alternate routes or brace for a potential delay in their schedules. In addition, the eastbound lanes of I-40 between Town Center Dr. in Midwest City and the I-240 interchange will be narrowed, with the possibility of intermittent ramp closures continuing throughout the rest of the year, as reported by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
For those traveling on I-40, there are several long-term adjustments to note. As detailed on the Oklahoma Department of Transportation website, effective immediately, the eastbound I-40 on and off-ramps at Anderson Rd. are out of service for the summer, and the southbound Douglas Blvd. cannot access the eastbound ramp. However, the northbound Douglas Blvd. off-ramp to eastbound I-40 remains open.
Additional closures include the westbound I-40 off-ramp to Industrial Blvd./Ave., now permanently shut down, urging drivers to utilize an alternative route. The I-44 ramp at S.W. 58th St. will also be closed from Sunday evening until Monday morning for construction. For those venturing south, they will face the southbound I-35 off-ramp to SH-9W closing for left turns from Monday evening into early Tuesday, and then another complete closure from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, as detailed by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Long-term projects are also impacting traffic patterns significantly. SH-9W is undergoing a major transformation, with the I-35 and SH-9W interchange being upgraded to a Diverging Diamond Interchange—an effort that will continue to reshape traffic until 2026. During this period, commuters are encouraged to consider alternate pathways such as US-77 and I-44 to circumvent the construction zone, as stated by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
Lastly, for drivers in Norman, take note that SH-9 has been reduced to a single lane in both directions between 12th Ave. S.E. and US-77/Classen Blvd., a situation that will persist through the remainder of August for essential bridge repairs. Travelers should plan for potentially slower movement and increased travel times, as per the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.
