
A tragic incident occurred near the Star Bend boat ramp in Olivehurst on the morning of August 1. A 66-year-old man from Olivehurst died after being swept away by strong currents while trying to retrieve his drifting boat. The Yuba County Sheriff's Department said the accident happened around 7:10 a.m. as he attempted to dock.
The department has reminded the community of the ever-present dangers associated with water bodies, stressing the necessity for safety measures such as wearing life jackets and refraining from entering potentially hazardous waters without proper equipment and support. In a statement, the Yuba County Sheriff's Department emphasized the critical nature of these precautions, stating, "The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the importance of safety precautions, including wearing life jackets and avoiding entry into unfamiliar or fast-moving water without appropriate equipment and backup."
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office has not released the identity of the deceased, citing the need to notify next of kin. This is standard procedure in cases of this nature, according to an official statement posted on the Yuba County Sheriff's Department’s Facebook page.
